Flax seeds, known as Alsi in hindi, provides various health and well being benefits. Flax is found to be a natural healer against various heart diseases, cancer and diabetes. Bountiful in Alpha-linolenic-Acid (ALA) that helps in preventing heart diseases, Flax seeds are also high in fibre, contain the optimum fraction of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids and have a phytoestrogen called lingan, which has antioxidant properties that shield against cancer. Apart from these, because of it's high amount of soluble fibre, Flax seeds reduce blood sugar levels and increase insulin levels after meals. Thus, flaxseed enhances insulin sensitivity and helps in case of Type-1 and Type-2 Diabetes.
Flax seeds are whole grains which are proved to be a low glycemic food, helping in stabilising blood sugar levels. Complications from diabetes can be lessened or prevented by flax hull lignans. It also prevents sudden fluctuations in blood sugar.
Before using flax seeds for diabetes, one must strictly consult a doctor and determine the exact dose required. Using flax seeds might coincide with the current medicines or might pose a risk of hypoglycaemia. Although flax seeds have shown a considerable response in lowering blood sugar levels, it is not fully accepted as a means of treatment yet, hence, Flax seeds will have to be used under proper caution until further research.
